LTE and WiMAX: which will win, and when?
From LTE intellectual property licensing regimes through to regulatory changes, spectrum auctions, and discussions about whether or not WiMAX will be able to exploit its technology readiness, the world is becoming increasingly interested in 3G and 4G telecommunications standards.

Some of the key questions that need answering include:
·         Is there any opportunity for a combined standard?
·         When will LTE and WiMAX be rolled out in large scale deployments?
·         Who will hold the power in the industry?
·         Which vendors will provide what equipment?
·         Is there scope for a combined standard?

Whether an operator, an equipment or component developer, or a regulator, the Face-off: LTE vs. WiMAX report provides answers to these and many more questions.

See below for some sample content from the report:

From the Spectrum Licensing Landscape section
The spectrum licensing landscape, and how it varies around the world, will have a huge impact on the market and opportunities for both LTE and WiMAX. This section discusses a number of factors that need to be considered, namely:
·         Spectrum that has been made available for LTE and WiMAX, how this varies by geography, and how the majority of WiMAX spectrum bands are also prime targets for LTE
·         Complexities of channel spacing and duplexing and why this means that LTE equipment will be more complex yet more flexible than WiMAX equipment
·         Priorities that have been assigned for LTE and WiMAX spectrum bands and how this will impact the level of competition in the market, with the 2.5/2.6GHz band as a key priority for both technologies
·         Variation in licensing regimes that apply to both LTE and WiMAX spectrum, and why this is likely to be more beneficial to LTE than to WiMAX
·         Changing licensing conditions around the world, and why these are favoring the adoption of WiMAX

A summary of the most recent and impending licensing procedures around the world is also included, demonstrating the current level of interest in spectrum licensing.
Spectrum between 700MHz and 3.5GHz (3500MHz) has been allocated to either or both of LTE and WiMAX, and in many cases these spectrum bands have also been assigned to other cellular services such as HSPA+ or UMB. The table below summarizes the spectrum bands that have been allocated to LTE and / or WiMAX around the world.

Priorities for LTE are the 2.5GHz (2.6GHz in many countries, particularly in Europe) band (both FDD and TDD profiles), the 1800MHz band and the 700MHz band, with the largest possible channel sizes in the spectrum available, to enable operators to maximize use of their spectrum. The next priorities are expected to be the 1700MHz and 2100MHz bands.

The 2.5GHz band is probably the most harmonized across the world, and now that WiMAX has been included in the IMT-2000 family, this band is receiving a lot of attention from regulators, who were waiting for this issue to be resolved. The spectrum is now perceived as more valuable, since it is no longer exclusive to traditional cellular usage, resulting in predicted higher revenues for regulators upon auctioning. In some recent licensing procedures, such as in New Zealand and The Netherlands, license winners are pledging to roll out WiMAX networks, whereas previously they would have been restricted to cellular 3G services.
